I felt like we were auditioning for "Elf 2" when we were shopping at Robert's Craft yesterday. We were walking down the isle, and I see two "little people" (midgets) pushing their cart coming towards us.
I didn't expect to have anything out of the ordinary happen, but all of the sudden, Brooklyn spots them, points and excitedly yells,"LOOK mom! It's LITTLE people!" They didn't turn around, but I'm sure they heard her as they walked away...I quickly told Brooklyn (whispering) that it wasn't nice to point and just to say "hi".
Sooooo...she turns around, waving her hand wildly in the air, yelling, "HIIII!!" Like they were going to turn around and start performing or something. At this point, I'm pretty embarrased, and take Brooklyn aside to have a little talk with her. I told her that everyone is different...there are tall people, short people, white people, black people, etc. BUT...we don't point at people and stare...just nicely say hi.
HOW do you explain this to a facinated 4 year old?! So, as we're finishing up, headed toward the check-out, Brooklyn spots her "little people" again and runs over to me and tells me that, "there they ARE!" pointing AGAIN! I definetly didn't want to get in line behind them, so I tried to distract as much as possible until they left. Oh man, what do you do?! I'm sure they get it all the time, but still...

Don't worry, Kids just do that. I can't remember exactly the incident I'm thinking of but I remember having to talk with my kids about people's differences in a public place after they'd already pointed them out. I do remember someone, probably all three kids at some point, pointing out something like a funny walk, or a cast, wheelchair etc, and telling the kids "Wow, that's cool hu!" and they thought so too. Anyway, I've only seen a little person once in my life, so go figure that your daughter see's one before she's 1/3 my age!
